Remove Crayon Stain From Carpets

First, what is Crayon? Second, what are its properties? These are questions that must be answered before you can begin the removal process for any stain! Understanding the make-up of the product you’re dealing with is essential. A crayon is made of wax and a non-toxic coloring agent. Crayons are safe for children and adults to draw with, but not so friendly for your carpet. The crayon wax can be difficult to remove, but the dye used is another story. There are household remedies that have been circulating around for years about crayon removal. I’m sure there are people that have had success using some of these remedies. They have not encountered a “true” crayon emergency! I’m talking about crayon that has been buried into the carpet from heat or a drawing disaster! There are several ways to remove crayon from carpet. Here are some tips on how to remove crayon for more severe applications.

First, there are some tools required to get the job done.

Scraper (Putty Knife, Butter Knife etc…)
Paint, Oil & Grease Remover (Hardware Store)
Spray Bottle (Hardware Store)
Soft Bristle Brush
White Cloth (Wash Cloth)
Hot Water Extractor (Hardware Store)

First, do not rub the stain! Rubbing creates friction which causes the waxy crayon to bury deeper into the carpet. The crayon dye will smear across the carpet as well. You want to use the putty knife to remove as much of the crayon as possible. This may take some time! Be careful not to damage the carpet fibers….this will be difficult when scraping! Be gentle!

Second, after you have removed the majority of the waxy build-up you need to treat the stain.

You are going to use the Paint, Oil & Grease remover to treat the stain. You do not want to use the remover full strength. This can cause the carpet color to fade or damage your carpet fibers. So, mix 1 part remover and 3 parts water in your spray bottle. When using chemicals, be sure to follow the mixing instructions (if available) and use with great caution. Most solvents contain vapors that are harmful for you. So, read the label! Once you have the proper mixture, spray the stain and blot immediately! This is so the color from the crayon does not run and set deeper into the carpet. Once the majority of the color has been removed by treating & blotting then you can begin to agitate the stain lightly with the soft bristle brush. Do not rub hard with the brush. This will help loosen any debris and agitate the cleaning mixture into the carpet. Blot again! Continue this process until the color is completely gone!

Once the stain is removed then you need to clean the carpet to remove any leftover debris and chemical residue. Fill your hot water extractor with water and carpet cleaning solution. Be sure to read the directions before using the extractor and carpet solution for best results. Clean the stain with the extractor until chemical smell and debris are gone. At this point, the stain should be completely gone! If not, call a professional carpet cleaner.

Removing Red Stains From Carpet

Probably more people are induced to change their carpet due to unsightly red stains, than those who do so because the carpet is badly worn. This is especially true where there is light colored carpet. In many instances, a homeowner will just try to cover the ugly red stains with an area throw rug instead of having the carpet cleaned. This is sometimes an acceptable or tolerable solution, but perhaps not the best possible one.

Many red stains are difficult to remove. Some may have become permanently fixed and therefore impossible to eliminate, but in most cases, if we understand the source and nature of the problem, we can get rid of the stain.

Red stains are either synthetic or organic. Synthetic stains are usually formed by the color additive FD&C Red #40 which is an azo dye approved by the FDA for use in foods, drugs and cosmetics. Drink manufacturers use it extensively to color various drink mixes especially Kool-Aid, but it is also to be found in numerous other types of food, medicines (like cough syrup), furniture stains, and cosmetics. Organic stains are those derived from naturally occurring substances and products like blood, jams, jellies, tomato and other fruit juices, and condiments.

The first question to be asked before tackling a red stain problem is: What is the source of the stain? If you know the answer to that question, the task becomes much simpler. In any case, when the stain is fresh, time is of the essence. Blot up as much of the spill as you can, immediately. A clean white cotton towel is preferable, but paper towels will do. Be careful not to rub the stain sideways as this may cause it to spread. If you have a wet vac, flood the area with water and then suck up all the moisture you can. This procedure will be most helpful where the stain is derived from natural substances that are soluble in an aqueous stain removal agent.

Stains caused by synthetic dyes are much more difficult to remove without affecting the coloring agents used to dye the carpet fibers initially. In order to achieve this it is usually necessary to apply a combination of chemical solutions to the carpet fibers, and apply heated water vapor to get the dye in solution and transfer it to an absorbent material like a cotton or paper towel. A clothes iron with the setting at moderate heat is usually used for this. Great care must be used, or the color could be bleached out of the carpet fibers, thereby presenting another, and probably much worse problem.

Perhaps the best solution is to call in a professional cleaner who is familiar with the properties of industrial chemicals, and who has sophisticated equipment to deal with this type of problem.

Carpet Cleaning Tip – Removing Ink Stains From Your Carpet

Ball point pens are commonly responsible for destroying a pair of pants, or a even the occasional shirt. But what if you have to remove an ink stain from your carpet? The technique is somewhat similar, but it is much easier and costly to destroy a carpet than an old pair of jeans. This short guide will walk you through the process of removing ink, while ensuring that your carpet fibers are not destroyed in the process.

First, remove as much ink as possible using a plain white paper towel. While you won’t be able to remove the enitre stain, it will make the following steps easier.

Second, apply alcohol to a white cloth and continue to dab the stain. This will break down the ink, and transfer it to the cloth. Continue until the majority of the ink is removed. (note: if you caused an ink stain, and rubbing alcohol is not readily available to remove the stain, hairspray will work instead; however, test a small area of your rug before proceeding. The use of hairspray is not recommended unless it is the only possible solvent available)

Next, use a household dishwashing solution to remove the remaining stain. As before, use a dabbing motion, and refrain from rubbing.

Once the stain is no longer visible, you can apply a small amount of water to remove any excess detergent or alcohol. Once again, dab the area with a damp cloth. If the stain is still visible, repeat the process starting with the first step.

Lastly, leave the area to dry after dabbing it with a dry cloth.

The Best Way To Clean Candle Wax From Your Carpet

Wax on the carpet can be an intimidating carpet cleaning challenge if you don’t know what it is, and how to remove it. But once you can identify it, and are aware of its properties, it is quite a simple job to get it out. I remember the first time I came face to face with this problem. I was overwhelmed, and after wasting a considerable amount of time, I had to abandon the attempt to clean it off the carpet. Then I did a little research, and my next wax cleaning job was so easy that I was as much amazed at the results, as my delighted carpet cleaning client.

Candles are usually made from paraffin, but beeswax, soy, tallow from animal fat and various kinds of gel are also used to make candles. A common characteristic though, is that the residue from burning candles harden rapidly and requires special effort to remove from the surfaces of materials like carpet fabric.

Incidentally, here are some interesting facts about candles, provided by the National Candle Association:

* Retail sales of candles in the USA are currently estimated at approximately $ 2 billion each year.
* 7 out of 10 U.S. households regularly use candles.
* 35% of annual candle sales take place during the Christmas/Holiday period.
* Candle users burn candles mostly in the living room (42%), kitchen (18%) and bedroom (13%).

Now, how do you remove candle wax from your carpet?

If the wax is fresh you might want to freeze it first with some ice to harden it.

Next scrape off as much of the hardened stuff as you can, using a spatula or dull knife or spoon. Be careful to not rip, tear or damage the carpet fibers in any way.

Get a piece of cardboard or other absorbent paper product that is at least an eight of an inch thick, and place it over the residual wax.

Plug in a clothes iron and allow it to heat up The setting should be fairly low. Preferably below the “wool” setting.

Place the hot iron on the cardboard or other absorbent material that you have placed over the wax, and allow the heat being transferred to melt the wax slowly. Lift the iron and change the spot regularly, in order to avoid getting the absorbent material over saturated with wax. Melted wax could be re-absorbed into the carpet and run down into the backing.

After the wax is removed, blot the spot repeatedly with a clean white towel to remove any soluble residue that may be left in the carpet.

Here are a few things to remember:

1. Do not over heat the iron. Most carpets, including wool, will be damaged by excessively high temperatures.
2. Never place the heated iron directly unto the carpet. The results could be disastrous.
3. Use an extension cord if necessary. Take care not to burn yourself with the hot iron.
4. Be patient. Repeat the process as often as necessary.

Some colored candle wax may still leave a stain after being removed from the carpet. This stain should come out easily by spraying the spot with water or rubbing alcohol and blotting repeatedly with a white cotton towel.

Remember to rinse the area thoroughly with fresh water afterwards. Dry the spot with a wet vac or dry towels.

If you can’t get rid of the stain, call a professional carpet cleaner to handle it for you.

Remove Pet Stains from Carpets

The best way to remove pet stains from carpets is to do it right away. Removing the odors and the stain can prove difficult if they have been allowed to set. You need to follow the basics of cleaning like avoiding harsh chemicals and scrubbing.

Vomit Stains

To remove vomit stains, you need to clean up the bulk of the stain with paper towels or old newspapers and dispose properly. Then it is necessary to blot the wet area with paper towels, tissue or absorbent cloth. The pet vomit stains can’t be treated with a cleaning solution made up of a cup of lukewarm water and¼ teaspoon of mild detergent.

Apply the solution to the area of the stains using an absorbent cloth and continue until there is no more stain. You then need to make another solution of 2 cups or lukewarm water mixed with a cup of white vinegar. Apply this second solution to the stained portion of carpet. The solution need to be rinsed off using lukewarm clean water by wetting the stained carpet fibers. The area then needs to be thoroughly blotted dry. You can remove the odor by sprinkling some baking soda and leaving it overnight. The carpet can then be vacuumed the following day.

Urine Stains

To remove pet urine stains from carpets, the moisture needs to be soaked up by rags or paper towels. The area then needs to be cleaned with a solution of one cup lukewarm water and one cup white vinegar. Apply the solution to the carpet with a cloth and try to work it through the fibers. Blot the area with paper towels.

Once the area dries, sprinkle baking soda liberally.

Prepare a solution that mixes a teaspoon of mild detergent with 3% hydrogen peroxide. This solution needs to be poured over the baking soda and should be worked into the fibers. Rinse off with lukewarm and clear water. Vacuum the carpet in order to remove the excess moisture and the pet urine stains.

Feces Stains

To remove pet feces stains from your carpets, you will need to remove all the solids by using old newspapers, putting your hand inside an old plastic bag and picking it up, or by scooping it up with a spatula. The area needs to be moistened with a solution of lukewarm water and white vinegar. Blot the area with tissues or paper towels. Then you need to apply a solution of a teaspoon of mild detergent and one cup of lukewarm water until the stains are gone. Baking soda needs t be sprinkled liberally and left overnight. It can be vacuumed the following day.

5 Tips On How To Remove Stains From Carpet

If you are looking for how to remove stains from carpet just keep in mind that you are not alone. Anyone who has owned carpet knows that it is nearly impossible to keep items that stain away from your floor. Especially if you have pets as carpet is simply a convenient place for them to relieve themselves. Urine in mattress or on carpet is really annoying.

There are a number of ways to treat urine stains from carpet but each case depends on the time it has had to set in on the carpet and the extent of the stain. Just remember, before you try any type of product on your carpet you need to first test the solution in a small, hidden area to make sure the product won’t cause an even bigger stain. Try moving a large piece of furniture and trying on the carpet underneath.

If you are fortunate, you can catch the cause of the stain quickly. If that is the case just grab a thick cotton towel, dampen it with warm water, then blot the cause of the stain. Add weight to the towel to help get at any liquid that reached the padding under the carpet. A wet-dry shop vac can be very handy at cleaning recent accidents as well.

However, if the liquid has had time to set in you must try a few different techniques.

Simple soap and water: Use a dish soap, preferably Dawn liquid which does a great job of binding with the source of stains. Apply the soap and water to the area. Use a large sponge and scrub around the affected area. Then you will want to use a wet washcloth to remove any excess soap before allowing the area to dry. If the stain is not completely removed you can repeat this process a few times. But I would not recommend more than three in a day as over-soaking will warp and wrinkle the carpet.
Vinegar and water: Another good way to remove stains, especially urine stains, is to use a solution of vinegar and tap water. This will not only help in the stain removal process but will also take address the smell. Apply the water and vinegar solution and lather it in. Allow it to soak for about 5 minutes then wipe the area with a warm wet washcloth. As with soap and water, this may not reach any liquid that reached the padding beneath. If that is the case, the stain may come back or leave an odor.
Enzyme cleaners: For more serious cases I recommend a good enzyme cleaner. This approach will cost you some money, but it may well be worth it. A gallon of the high end brand will cost you around $ 50.00. You can find a number of products available online through sites that address staining issues, like Again, it’s not a free household remedy but it will eliminate all the odor and will remove stains on most carpets. As with any other product, make sure to test a discrete area first.
Professional carpet cleaners: The most expensive route would be to call a local carpet cleaning service. Sometimes if the stain is too old, too large, or if you have a number of stains, it is best to just hire a professional crew to come in. This will cost you around $ 200 and is a last resort to those with severe cases.

The best tip of all is to get to any spill or accident quickly, and to not ever let a stain go untreated for a long time. Once it sets for awhile it will become near impossible to remove. But keep in mind the tips above and you might be able to remove stains from carpet in your home should, rather when, the need arises.

Removing Stains From Carpet

You would be surprised at so many highly unlikely things one could use while removing stains from carpet. Most of these are available in your bathrooms and kitchens. Some stains, however, may be a bit more stubborn, but there are quite a few specialized stain removers out there that can make removing stains from carpet a no hassles job.

Firstly, it is important to understand types of stains. Stains can generally be classified as water-based (juices, alcohol, vomit, milk, clay, cologne, Latex paints, fruits, beer or blood,); oil based (ink, crayons, cosmetics, grease, gravy) and a category called special water based stains (coffee, tea and urine). The last category is called so since these are difficult stains to remove in terms of their color and odor. Generally the same product or method can be used for removing stains from carpet from the same category.

There are quite a lot of things that you use daily which can also come in quite handy while removing stains from carpet. For example:

• Shaving cream/lotion: Foaming shaving lotion or cream can come in quite handy while removing mud stains from a carpet. It also works quite well on most other types of stains – water based and oil based.

• Vaseline: Oil based stains from cosmetics – especially lipsticks-can be ‘loosened’ by rubbing Vaseline or petroleum jelly. When you feel satisfied, scoop up the jelly and wash the spot with a solution of dishwashing detergent and water.

• WD40: This is quite a cure-all for removing stains from carpet. If you get chewing gum, tar or wax on the carpet, dab some WD40 and out it comes. It takes a few applications, but is much faster than any other method.

• Neutrogena shampoo: This might seem expensive, but it’s a good way to take off stains made by pastel chalks, crayons and possibly other oil based colors too.

• Baby wipes or diapers: In the process of removing stains from carpet, if the carpet gets quite wet, then use baby diapers to blot up the dampness.

They’re super absorbent, and make less of a mess than regular blotting paper. Ensure you keep a little weight on the diaper to help it do its job.
